Damn cars

For some reason the car I’m currently driving (a Holden Astra – see here for why) wasn’t working this morning. And of course I was already leaving late to go to work. Not good. Only other option?
Ride, cause I just cbf trying to jump the car, and it was parked at the bottom of a dip so good luck roll-starting it.

So, 50 min later (12k ride k go) I rock up at work, maggoted cause the ride is up hill both ways! And of course I forgot to take food with me, so gotta wait till knockoff to get a feed. Fun day! At least tonight I’ll get to ride back cruisily and enjoy the sun a bit.

Site changes

Just recently made some changes to the site to remove old crap that was gathering and add some functionality – incoming Gravatars, as well as post by mail – so things might break while I work out the bugs.

Anyone skilled with css/html to help align the Gravatars in their own proper <div> would be greatly appreciated – currently they’re using the existing Author <div> and its pretty ugly.

EDIT: Fixed, yay for idleness at work allowing me to surf endlessly.

This is how it was done

<p><div class=”gravatar”><?php echo get_avatar( get_the_author_email(), ‘60′ ); ?></div><h2><a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” rel=”bookmark” title=”Permanent Link to <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>”><?php the_title(); ?></a></h2>
<small><?php the_author() ?><br />
<?php the_time(’F jS, Y’) ?> at <?php the_time() ?></small>
</p>

removing the

<a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” rel=”bookmark” title=”Permanent Link to <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>”>

bit for the single post page, cause linking to itself is kinda redundant

Ubisoft Convention

Monday morning after a shitty weekend (read: almost dying from dehydration, 4 of my section having to be evacuated to hospital…sucked pretty hard), Devin woke me with a invite to a Ubisoft game convention that night. Last minute planning for the win.

So I rocked up at his, and after some pre-drinks we headed in to the city.

The convention itself wasn’t too bad, not as nerdy as I expected it to be – a bar tab of $1000+ kinda helped with that. Couple of cool new games coming out, Farcry 2 looks great, some interesting Wii concepts etc.

What was most enjoyable about the evening was not the games, but the people. I ran into Megan from Eltham College days, and we ended up catching up most of the night. Lots of fun, she beat me in Farcry 2 multiplayer :(

After the convention, we went our separate ways and Dev, I and the rest headed home. A few more drinks later, I headed home to pass out. Good night.

Dinosaurs

I’m at work, and I’m bored. Actually doing work is unthinkable, and a random comment about raptor proofing started me pondering dinosaurs, and comics about them.

First off was Dinosaur Comics. Quickly tiring, I broadened my search, and here are some of the best (in my opinion.

Annoyingly WP constrains the image sizes, but the original sites are linked – enjoy :P

Slurpies are awesome

Driving back from base, Ippa and I stopped to grab a Slurpee from the Box Hill 7-Eleven.

I have to say, best Slurpee mixture of any 7-Eleven I’ve been to, the thickness and consistency was perfect. Layered awesomely, two of the flavours even had taurine in them to get us extra high.

As usual, the drive home consisted of one of us steering/changing gears, the other controlling pedals and occasionally blinking arbitrarily…add wet road and bald tires to the mix and it’s a whole lot of fun.

New Goodies

One of my work contacts can score me Dlink hardware really cheap, so I managed to score a DNS-343 and a DGL-4500 really cheap – about 40% of recommended retail price.

Getting new infrastructure set me thinking about getting a new PC (mine being an old p.o.s.) which led me to this and of course this. I am of course talking about the Intel Nehalem architecture being released soon, and the Larrabee GPU architecture in development. Really awesome, but follow the links for more info as most people wont be too interested.

Spose it means I’ll have to wait till they come out before wasting my money on a new PC. Boo.

TLE Concert, Precinct and Chippers 22nd

Went to The Living End concert last night (friday), was awesome. Had met up with Grant and his cousins at Young n Jacksons prior, got a feed, then hit up the show.

Was at the Queens Bridge Hotel, and was pretty packed by the time everything got started. Ended up at the front on the rail, moshing for the entire night, so any chance I got I was skulling beers to keep up the buzz inbetween fighting to keep my space on the fence.

After that finished, around 12ish, we bailed and headed out seperate ways – Grant and his cousins off to Crown, me off to Precint to meet up with Chipper and celebrate his 22nd. Thing is, I got to Flinders just after a train had left, next one was in 20 minutes…in my inebriated state I decided running to Richmond was the most logical next step – so off I ran

I was running past Richmond Station as the train pulled in, so I felt justified in my exertion. As I rocked up to Precinct, the bouncers wondered why I was out of breath. I don’t think the explanation of running from Flinders really led them to believe I was really sober, but they were cool and seconds later I was stealing the birthday boy’s beer from his hand and skulling it.

Much drinking and dancing later, around 3, they kicked us all out and we ended up at maccas. At this point I was starting to ponder my situation, cause I had told Mish I’d be home at 1, and hadn’t been in contact since then…

Anyways, drove (James was driving) by a cop shop on the way back, walked in and got myself breatho’d – only 0.019
5 minutes later I was on me way home, ready for jack all sleep and a hungover shift the next mornin

Belgian Beer Cafe

Benji Turner was down from Sydney this past week, playing Basketball to represent his team. He says he’s good, but his such a skinny runt I can’t believe him :P

Either way, last night was his last night in Melb, so we hit the town after grabbing a feed at the Golden Gate Hotel. Great place, just wouldn’t reccomend the parma.

There were 5 of us – Ben had managed to persuade Jay (Vaire) and Leo (KnightDKN) to come out, plus Mish and I – until I got drunk and started ringing around. The wing-it factor was high, and within half and hour Adam (Melic) and Nick (Cougs) had rocked up, and Damien (Fluke), Terry (Applepie), Trevor (Ashran) were heading to the beer gardens to meet us.
Hell, Alvin (Grundo) just made it back to Australia after his honeymoon and he almost came out too! LFDU brought back together :P

I got way too drunk, because after buying a jug of beer and finding out that everyone else either on spirits or not drinking (pussies), I downed the thing in 10 minutes. Nothing is really 100% after that, but it was a damn good night.

At one point Benji was shouting at me through a toilet cubicle for 5 minutes telling me it was ok to vomit. Not really sure why, as I managed to retain the parma I ate earlier without issue, but amusing nonetheless.

Trev offered to drive us home, as I was too drunk to operate effectively and the last trains had just gone. Don’t recall much beyond getting in his car, but I woke fully clothed in the shower at 3am, which indicates success in some way or form.

Inverloch

This week has been Uni holidays, so James took a week off work and we headed down to his beach house in Inverloch to make use of our free time. We drove down on Sunday (28th) eve, Dave and James in one car, Mish and I in another, Baxter in the third.

Couldn’t do too much on arrival, as Jimmy’s parents were there and wouldn’t appreciate a bunch of drunken teens. Instead? Pictionary. While Mish looked on, Mr Young and Mr Merrett played off against Baxter and I. The first couple of goes were tight, real competition. Then they lapped us. Twice. Damn you Baxter!

The next morn we played golf with Jimmy’s dad, Doug. When I say we, I mean James Baxter and I. Mish and Dave rented a golf buggy and spent 2 hours hooning around the golf course, chasing Echidnas.

That night, as it was the Senior Merretts last night at the beach house and they were entertaining, we got drunk the old fashioned way. Beer, on the beach.

The next day, after an hour of body boarding (read: pounded by waves for an hour), we busted out the real drinks. Over 10L of spirits, including Skittle Vodka – oddly pleasant to drink. Lots of Coronas. Sangria. All accompanied by way too much food, including Fish n Chips, home made Focaccias with dip, and a Roast. 3 main meals, all within 5 hours. ugh.

Wednesday consisted of copious amounts of cleaning, then a leisurely drive home. Where more cleaning waited. Which I sill need to do. sigh.
